The Nordbastei is the north terrace viewpoint at Melk Abbey, positioned on the cliff edge directly above the Danube at the entrance to the Wachau gorge. It is the best single viewpoint in the Wachau for reading the river valley’s geography. Accessible during abbey visiting hours; included in the general admission ticket. Melk is on the Westbahn rail line, 75-90 minutes from Vienna. The terrace was designed by Jakob Prandtauer as part of the 1702-1736 Baroque rebuilding.
