The Museum Gugging at Am Campus 2 in Maria Gugging near Klosterneuburg houses the work of the Gugging Artists, a group whose art practice began in the 1950s when psychiatrist Leo Navratil recognized the artistic quality of his patients’ drawings at the Lower Austrian State Clinic. The 2006 museum occupies the grounds of the original clinic, and some artists still live and work on the campus in the Haus der Künstler. Art Brut is the term coined by Jean Dubuffet for art made outside mainstream cultural structures; Gugging is one of Europe’s key institutions for it. Check museumgugging.at for current opening times and entrance fees. Accessible from Vienna in approximately 30 minutes.
