Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg

Also known as museum-der-moderne, museum-der-moderne-salzburg

Salzburg's modern and contemporary art museum sits on top of a limestone cliff directly above the Baroque old town, which is one of the odder institutional juxtapositions in Austrian cultural geography.

Museum der Moderne on Moenchsberg with its stone tower seen across the cliff face in winter in Salzburg.

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg sits on the Moenchsberg cliff above the old town, accessible via the public lift from Anton-Neumayr-Platz in under two minutes. The 2004 marble building offers a terrace with direct views over Salzburg’s Cathedral domes. The museum covers 20th and 21st century art with rotating exhibitions and a permanent collection strong in Austrian modernism. Open Tue-Sun 10am-6pm, Wed until 8pm; closed Monday. Check museumdermoderne.at for current admission prices and exhibitions. The terrace is accessible during museum hours.
