Rust’s 1512 medieval town wall is one of the better-preserved examples of Renaissance urban fortification in Austria, built during a period of Ottoman military pressure when border towns along the Hungarian frontier were systematically fortified. Rust is one of Austria’s smallest Free Royal Towns, whose freedoms were purchased from Emperor Leopold I in 1681 in exchange for wine and gold. The wall circuit is freely walkable from the town center; Rust is 30 minutes from Eisenstadt by bus on the western shore of the Neusiedler See.
