The Maximilianstrasse in Munich is a 19th century royal boulevard running from the Nationaltheater to the Bavarian parliament building, the Maximilianeum, in a straight line designed as a processional axis. The facades are built in the unique Maximilianstil, an eclectic blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements developed specifically for this street under King Maximilian II between 1853 and 1875. Today it is Munich’s primary luxury shopping address. It is freely walkable and most rewarding at the Maximilianeum end, where the parliament building closes the visual axis.
