The Mausoleum of Ferdinand II sits adjacent to the Graz Cathedral and is routinely overlooked by visitors who stop at the church and move on. The Mannerist exterior by Pietro de Pomis, begun in 1614, contains a Baroque interior redesigned by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in 1687. Emperor Ferdinand II, who ruled during the Thirty Years’ War, is buried in the crypt below. The oval dome frescoes and stucco work are exceptional. The mausoleum and cathedral together take about an hour; the site is a 5-minute walk from Hauptplatz in the Graz city center.
