The Mariazeller Hauptplatz is the central square of Mariazell, Austria’s most important Catholic pilgrimage town, dominated at its northern end by the Baroque Basilika Mariazell. Over a million pilgrims visit annually; the major pilgrimage dates are Assumption (August 15) and Nativity of Mary (September 8). The square is free and always accessible. Mariazell is reached by the scenic Mariazellerbahn narrow-gauge railway from St. Poelten (2 hours) or by car from Graz or Vienna. Combine with a visit to the basilica interior.
