The Dachstein Mammuthöhle is four times larger than the famous Ice Cave next door, but most visitors never find it. Where the Dachstein Rieseneishoehle draws the crowds with its ice formations, the Mammut Cave (mammoth cave) runs 64 kilometers of dry cave passages through the Dachstein massif, the longest known cave system in the Upper Austrian Alps.

The Dachstein Mammuthöhle near Hallstatt is the larger and less-visited counterpart to the famous Ice Cave. At 64 kilometers of mapped passages, it is the longest known cave system in the Upper Austrian Alps, running through the same Dachstein massif that produces the iconic lake-and-mountain scenery above. Guided tours run approximately May to October; the cave stays around 5 degrees Celsius year-round so bring a warm layer. Combination tickets cover both the Mammut Cave and the Rieseneishoehle. Reach the caves via the Dachstein cable car from Obertraun, then a short walk from the upper station.
