The Maltatal valley south of Gmünd in Carinthia lines its gorge walls with more than 30 waterfalls, several falling directly over the Malta Hochalmstrasse toll road. The Fallbach near the valley entrance is around 200 meters high and visible for free from the roadside. The full toll road (seasonal, approximately May to October) continues to the Koelnbrein Dam, Austria’s highest arch dam. Allow half a day for the valley and dam. Drive south from Gmünd; the valley is signed from town.
