The Malta Hochalmstrasse is one of Austria’s most underrated drives: a 14.4-kilometer toll road through the Maltatal gorge in Carinthia that passes more than 30 waterfalls before ending at the Koelnbrein Dam, Austria’s highest arch dam at 200 meters. Some waterfalls spill directly over the road barrier. At the top, a suspended sky walkway crosses the reservoir with exposure to the full scale of the dam and the surrounding Hohe Tauern peaks. The road is open from approximately May to October. Compared to the Grossglockner, this route attracts a fraction of the visitors and rewards drivers willing to leave the main alpine road corridor. Allow at least half a day; a full day lets you stop properly at the valley waterfalls and walk the dam.
