A castle documented since 799, rebuilt under Emperor Friedrich III in the 15th century, now housing the Upper Austrian state museum with a controversial modern glass wing added in 2009. The castle terrace is freely accessible and gives the best free Danube view in Linz. Museum open Tuesday to Friday and weekends; check landesmuseum.at. Linz Castle
Also known as Linzer Schloss
The Schloss above the Altstadt, documented since 799, rebuilt multiple times, most recently housing the Schlossmuseum with collections spanning art, nature, and technology. The south wing was destroyed in a fire in 1800 and replaced by a modern glass-and-steel extension in 2009. The castle terrace gives Danube views. Emperor Friedrich III died here in 1493.
