Memorial site of a Mauthausen subcamp that operated from 1944 to 1945 fifteen minutes’ walk from Stift Melk’s famous Baroque monastery. The camp used forced labor for underground armament production; approximately 5,000 of 14,000 prisoners died. Exhibition in the former crematorium building. Free admission; check gedenkstaette-melk.org for hours. The juxtaposition of monastery and camp at the same location is among the most historically stark in Austria.
