The Kölnbreinsperre is Austria’s highest dam at 200 meters, completed in 1977 at 1,902 meters in the Malta valley above Gmünd in Carinthia. Accessible by the seasonal Malta Hochalmstrasse toll road; VERBUND visitor center on site. Check verbund.com for opening dates. Gmünd is on the Salzburg-Villach rail line. The drive up through the gorge is part of the experience.

It is an arch dam with a crest 626 meters long and is the centrepiece of VERBUND's Malta-Reisseck high-altitude power plant system.
