Austria’s only five-aisled Gothic church, in Freistadt, Upper Austria, begun in 1288 and expanded through the 15th century using income from the city’s position on the Bohemian trade route. The five-aisled plan (a structural ambition normally reserved for major cathedral projects) reflects Freistadt’s medieval prosperity as a toll city on the Böhmische Steig trade road. Freistadt also has some of the best-preserved medieval city walls in Austria; the church and the town walls together are worth the 40-minute train from Linz.
