The wooded hill on Salzburg’s right bank with what most residents consider the city’s best panoramic view. Walk 15 minutes up the Via Crucis (stations of the cross path, 1736) to the Hettwer Bastei defensive bastion for the classic composition: fortress, cathedral domes, and Altstadt roofscape across the Salzach. Less crowded than the Mönchsberg because there is no elevator. Stefan Zweig wrote here from 1919 to 1934 before fleeing the Nazi rise; the Capuchin monastery (1599) crowns the hill. Free; accessible at all times.
