The unfinished imperial wing that Emperor Karl VI began in 1730 with ambitions to create an Austrian Escorial, a palace-monastery monument to Habsburg dynastic power equivalent to the Spanish original. Only four of the planned nine towers were completed before Karl VI died in 1740 and Maria Theresa’s succession crisis ended the project.
