Eisenstadt’s Jüdisches Viertel survived centuries of expulsion orders that cleared Jewish residents from most Austrian towns because the Esterházy family, the aristocratic dynasty that controlled Burgenland, formally protected the community as economically useful. Two historic cemeteries and the Austrian Jewish Museum (one of Austria’s most significant Jewish heritage collections) occupy the quarter. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00; EUR 5 adults. Eisenstadt is one hour from Vienna by train. Combine with Schloss Esterházy, where Haydn worked as court composer for the same family.
