Enns’s Johanniterkapelle, built around 1330, holds a Gothic fresco cycle from 1320 to 1360 that is among the oldest surviving medieval wall paintings in Upper Austria. The star-vaulted ceiling frames an interior that has changed little in 700 years. Enns is Austria’s oldest documented town (city rights granted 1212) and the site of the Roman legionary fortress Lauriacum.
