The Dom zu St. Jakob in Innsbruck holds a 16th century Cranach the Elder painting of the Virgin Mary that became one of the most reproduced devotional images in Catholic Central Europe, and then built a lavish Baroque cathedral around it. The Asam brothers rebuilt the church from 1717 to 1724 with ceiling frescoes that use perspective illusion to dissolve the roof into sky. The building was badly damaged in World War II; the frescoes are restorations. Free entry, open daily from 07:30; 5 minutes walk from the Goldenes Dachl. Combine with the nearby Hofkirche, which holds Maximilian I’s empty tomb.
