funicular in Innsbruck

Hungerburgbahn

The Hungerburgbahn is the funicular that connects central Innsbruck to the Hungerburg residential plateau at 860 meters, and it is also one of the more striking pieces of contemporary architecture in Austria.

The Hungerburgbahn connects central Innsbruck to the Hungerburg plateau at 860m and is the first stage of the Nordkette cable car system reaching 2,334m. All four stations were designed by Zaha Hadid for the 2007 rebuild, with curvilinear white roofs modeled on ice formations; each station has a different form responding to its elevation. The Congress station is at Rennweg 3, walkable from the Hauptbahnhof. The Innsbruck Card covers the Hungerburgbahn and upper Nordkette sections. Check nordkette.com for current hours and pricing. The Alpenzoo station gives access to one of Europe’s few alpine-animals-only zoos.
