The House of Terror in Budapest occupies the building at Andrassy ut 60 that served consecutively as the headquarters of Hungary’s Nazi-collaborating Arrow Cross Party (from 1944) and the communist secret police AVH (from 1945). The museum opened in 2002 and documents both regimes in the same structure. The basement interrogation cells, water-torture room, and execution chambers are original and can be walked through. The architect cut the word “TERROR” into the roof overhang so sunlight casts the letters as shadows onto the building’s walls. A Perpetrators’ Gallery displays photographs of identified informants and torturers from both regimes. Open Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00; admission around EUR 8-10. Metro Line 1 (yellow) to Vorosmarty utca.
