During the Siege of Budapest in 1944-1945, this underground hospital beneath Castle Hill was the only medical facility in the city capable of performing X-rays, running on its own generators while the rest of Budapest had no power. Designed for 60 patients, it treated up to 600 wounded simultaneously.

The Hospital in the Rock (Sziklakkorhaz) is a WWII-era underground hospital carved into the cave network beneath Buda Castle Hill, built in 1939-1944 and operational throughout the Siege of Budapest (1944-1945). Designed for 60 patients, it treated 600 wounded simultaneously on its own generators while the rest of the city had no power. After the war it was converted into a nuclear bunker (1958-1962) and classified top secret. Opened as a museum in 2008 with original equipment and wax figure recreations.
