Rust’s Hofgassen are arcaded courtyard passages and external stairways running through the interiors of the town’s wine merchant houses, connecting the main streets to private yards and wine cellars. The Arkadenstiegen, external arcaded staircases on house facades, give Rust a distinctly Italian character unique among Austrian small towns. The town was granted free imperial city status in 1681 partly in exchange for wine, and the merchant architecture reflects the wealth from Ruster Ausbruch, the sweet botrytized wine still produced here. Free access; daylight hours; some passages are private. Rust is on the western shore of the Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, 20 km from Eisenstadt.
