The Hofbrauhaus was founded in 1589 as the private brewery of Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria and was off-limits to ordinary citizens until King Ludwig I opened it to the public in 1828. Mozart lived around the corner and described drinking here while working on "Idomeneo." Lenin was a regular patron in the years before World War I.

The Hofbrauhaus at Platzl 9 was founded in 1589 as Duke Wilhelm V’s private court brewery and was off-limits to ordinary Bavarians until King Ludwig I opened it in 1828. Mozart lived nearby and drank here during the composition of “Idomeneo”; Lenin was a regular before World War I. The current building is a faithful 1958 reconstruction of the 1897 original, bombed in 1944. The ground-floor Schwemme seats 1,000 at communal benches with a brass band; the first-floor Festsaal is a full ballroom. Beer (one-liter Mass) approximately EUR 12-13; no entry fee. Open daily 9:00-23:30. Five minutes east of Marienplatz. Tourist-heavy; come at weekday lunch to avoid the worst of it.
