Wiener Neustadt’s Hauptplatz is one of Lower Austria’s largest medieval market squares, with the adjacent Marienmarkt adding a second civic space to the city’s historic center. The city was founded in 1194 using the ransom paid for Richard I of England, captured by Leopold V, and later became an important Habsburg residence. The Military Academy here, founded by Maria Theresa in 1752, is the world’s oldest continuously operating military academy. Always accessible, free. Approximately 45 minutes from Vienna Hauptbahnhof by direct train. Combine with the Gothic Neustaedter Dom and the Burg Wiener Neustadt.
