The Hallstattersee is the 8.5-kilometer lake below Hallstatt village, 125 meters deep, cold, and sitting in a steep-walled glacial valley. The ferry from Hallstatt Bahnhof (train station) crosses to the village in 10 minutes, timed to train arrivals (EUR 3-4 one way). The classic waterfront photograph is taken from the eastern shore near the station at sunrise. Swimming in the lake is free. By train on the Salzkammergut railway line, then ferry; or by car to the village (parking capped in peak season). Combine with Bad Ischl or the Dachstein ice cave for a full Salzkammergut day.
