Hallstatt Old Town

The Altstadt, or old town, of Hallstatt is essentially the entire village: a compressed grid of medieval and Renaissance houses built on a narrow shelf between the lake and the cliff face, with almost no room to expand in any direction. The houses run directly to the water's edge on one side and up stone staircases into the rock on the other.

The famous Marktplatz lake view exists because the geography genuinely allows nothing but beautiful compositions. The village has about 800 residents and receives up to 10,000 visitors per day in peak season. Arrive early morning or stay overnight to experience it outside the tour group window. Free to walk; individual attractions charge entry. Reach it by ferry from the train station on the opposite shore, by bus from Bad Ischl, or by car with parking outside the village.
