Hallstatt Museum

The Welterbemuseum Hallstatt holds the finds from the prehistoric cemetery excavated beginning in the 1840s, which gave its name to the Hallstatt culture: the early Iron Age phase of European prehistory spanning roughly 800 to 450 BC. The salt mine that made Hallstatt one of the wealthiest communities in prehistoric Central Europe also preserved extraordinary grave goods, now displayed here. The museum sits on the lakefront at Seestrasse 56. Allow 1 to 2 hours. Pairs well with the Hallstatt Beinhaus above the village and the Salzbergwerk salt mine above that for a full vertical cross-section of what human life in this location has meant across different eras.
