The Mahler Komponierhauschen at Steinbach am Attersee is the small wooden cabin where Gustav Mahler composed his Second, Third, and Fourth symphonies between 1893 and 1896, built in the garden of his rented house to provide the acoustic isolation he required. The cabin is a single room with a piano and a desk, barely larger than a small study. The Third Symphony, his longest at over 90 minutes, was written in it. Open seasonally; small admission fee. Eastern Attersee shore; regional bus from Vocklamarkt rail station. Combine with the Klimt sites on the western shore for a full Attersee arts day.
