Budapest’s Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok) opened in 1897 with a Neo-Gothic steel frame and a Zsolnay ceramic-tiled roof, at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge. The ground floor is a working food market with paprika, Hungarian sausages, foie gras, and pickled produce; the upper gallery has tourist food stalls that are acceptable but not the point. Built as a public health measure to bring food inspection under municipal control, the market also allowed goods to be unloaded from Danube boats directly into the basement.
