The Granattor on the Millstaetter Alpe above Millstatt is a rock formation and viewpoint named for the garnet deposits in the metamorphic Nock mountain geology above the lake. The hike to it, 2 to 3 hours round trip from Millstatt, gives the elevated lake view that the famous promenade below cannot offer. Free trail; accessible in summer. Millstatt is 20 minutes by bus from Spittal an der Drau. Combine with the Stift Millstatt, one of the oldest Romanesque monastery churches in Carinthia, and a swim in the lake, one of the warmest in Austria.
