Grafenegg Castle in Lower Austria hosts one of Austria’s best outdoor classical music festivals every summer in a Wolkenturm (Cloud Tower) stage seating 1,700, completed in 2007. The castle itself, rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style in the 1840s by a Habsburg archduke, stands in park grounds 70 km west of Vienna near the Wachau wine region. Festival programming draws major international orchestras and conductors; tickets range from EUR 20 to EUR 150 and popular concerts sell out well in advance. The castle grounds are free to visit outside festival season. By car from Vienna or by bus from Krems an der Donau. Combine with a Wachau wine tasting or a stop in Krems for a full day.
