Getreidegasse

Salzburg's most famous street and the heart of the Altstadt. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born at No. 9 (Mozart's Birthplace). The Hagenauer family, the Mozarts' landlord, lived in the same building. The street is known for its medieval wrought-iron guild signs, narrow passages (Durchhäuser), and historic shopfronts.

Getreidegasse is Salzburg’s most famous street and genuinely worth walking once, ideally before 9am when the tour groups haven’t arrived. The wrought-iron guild signs above every shop door are Salzburg’s visual signature: originally they communicated what each business sold in a city where most customers couldn’t read. Today even global chains like McDonald’s are required to commission custom iron signs under the preservation code. Mozart was born at number 9 in 1756. The Durchhaeuser, medieval through-passages cut through the buildings, connect the street to parallel streets and are worth using to escape the crowds. The street runs through the heart of the Altstadt (the medieval old town); allow 30 minutes and combine with a detour to Universitaetsplatz.
