Festung Hohenwerfen is an 11th-century hilltop fortress 40 km south of Salzburg above the town of Werfen, with panoramic views of the Salzach valley and the Tennengebirge. It hosts daily falconry shows with eagles, hawks, and vultures and a regional weapons museum. Admission is EUR 17 for adults including the funicular from Werfen village. Open April to October; check salzburg-burgen.at for exact hours. Combine with the nearby Eisriesenwelt ice cave for a full day in the Werfen area.

Festung Hohenwerfen
A spectacular medieval fortress above the Salzach gorge near Werfen, 40 km south of Salzburg. Founded in 1077 by Gebhard von Helfenstein, the same year as Hohensalzburg Fortress.
