The slender neo-Gothic church whose pointed steeple appears in virtually every Hallstatt photograph. Built in 1863 on the lakefront between the Catholic parish church above and the lake below. The steeple against the mountain backdrop has become the single most recognizable image of Hallstatt and arguably of Austria's lake country.

The Evangelical Christuskirche at Hallstatt’s lakefront was built in 1863 for a Protestant congregation that had been denied a public church since the Counter-Reformation. Its neo-Gothic steeple (neo-Gothic means a 19th-century revival of medieval pointed arches and vertical stone forms) against the Dachstein backdrop is the most-reproduced image of the Hallstatt UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
