The Erzberg above Eisenerz is the largest open-pit iron ore mine in Central Europe and has been worked continuously for over 1,000 years. The 1,532-meter terraced peak is still being actively mined. The Hauly tour places visitors into massive 100-tonne dump trucks for a guided drive through the working mine levels; nothing else in Austria compares. Open April to October; around EUR 20-25 for the Hauly tour; book ahead in peak season at abenteuer-erzberg.at. By car from Leoben (30 km) or Bruck an der Mur. Combine with Eisenerz old town and the Gesaeuse National Park, both within 30 km.

Erzberg
Also known as Steirischer Erzberg
The Erzberg is not a mountain in any natural sense: those terraced steps cut into the red-ochre rock face are the result of 1,000 years of ore extraction, and the whole thing is still being actively mined. The Hauly tour puts visitors into enormous dump trucks for a guided ride through the working mine. Nothing else in Austria is remotely like it.
