The Erz der Alpen UNESCO Global Geopark (designated 2020) covers the Pongau region around Bischofshofen, documenting 4,000 years of copper and iron ore mining from Bronze Age (1800-800 BC) to modern extraction. The Mitterberg copper mines above Bischofshofen were among the most productive prehistoric mining sites in Central Europe. The geopark covers a wide landscape area with multiple sites; the Erzweg Kupfer trail is the main self-guided heritage route. Bischofshofen is 45 minutes by train from Salzburg on the main south line.
