The Eisriesenwelt above Werfen is the world’s largest accessible ice cave, extending 42 km into the Tennengebirge with permanently sub-zero temperatures and ice formations up to 25 meters high. Guided tours cover about 1 km illuminated by magnesium flares. Open May to late October; cable car + guided tour around EUR 25-30; allow 4-5 hours from Werfen. Werfen is 45 minutes by train from Salzburg; Hohenwerfen Castle is in the same valley and combines well in one day. Bring warm clothing: 0°C inside regardless of outside weather.
