Eggenberg Palace

A UNESCO World Heritage baroque palace on the western edge of Graz. The Planetary Hall with its 24 state rooms (one for each hour) is the architectural centerpiece. The palace houses the Alte Galerie (medieval and baroque art), the Coin Cabinet, and the Archaeology Museum.

Schloss Eggenberg (UNESCO World Heritage, part of the Historic Centre of Graz designation) is a 1625-1635 Baroque palace whose structure encodes the calendar: 4 towers for the seasons, 24 state rooms for the hours of the day, 365 windows for the days of the year. The English landscape gardens with free-roaming peacocks are free and open year-round. The Alte Galerie inside holds Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “Peasant Wedding.” State rooms accessible April-October by guided tour; museums Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. Combined museum ticket around EUR 15-18; check museum-joanneum.at. Tram line 1 from Hauptplatz, about 20 minutes.
