The Echerntal is the valley above Hallstatt leading into the Dachstein massif, offering a hiking escape from one of Austria’s most crowded lake villages. The Waldbachstrub waterfall is 1.5-2 hours round trip; the upper routes reach the Wiesberghaus mountain hut and the Dachstein plateau. Free to hike; valley entrance is on foot from Hallstatt village (10-15 minutes from the main square). No driving access. The Echerntal is part of the Hallstatt Dachstein-Salzkammergut UNESCO World Heritage landscape, the same prehistoric terrain that gave the Hallstatt archaeological culture (1200-500 BC) its economic foundation through the salt mines above.
