The Drei-Seen-Tour is a guided half-day boat excursion from Bad Aussee across three lakes: the Grundlsee, Kammersee, and Toplitzsee. The Toplitzsee is the draw: a deep, narrow lake enclosed by steep forest walls where Nazi SS units dumped millions of pounds of Operation Bernhard counterfeit British currency in 1945 (recovered in 1959); the lake has been searched repeatedly for gold rumored never found. Seasonal operation (May-October); check local Bad Aussee operators for current schedules and prices. Book ahead in summer. Bad Aussee is accessible by regional train from the Westbahn junction at Attnang-Puchheim.
