The Doppelwendeltreppe (Double Spiral Staircase) inside the Graz Burg at Hofgasse 15 is a late-Gothic geometric marvel: two separate spiral staircases share the same tower shaft and central column but never intersect, built in 1499 so that ascending and descending traffic could pass through the same space without meeting. Free to visit in the Burg courtyard; 5 minutes on foot from Hauptplatz. 15-20 minutes to visit. The staircase was built during the reign of Maximilian I, when Graz was a Habsburg residential capital and Gothic master builders were working at the peak of their craft.
