The Donnerkogel Via Ferrata on the Donnerkogel massif above Gosau is one of the most serious and photogenic via ferrata routes in Austria, including the “Sky Ladder,” a vertical iron ladder on an overhanging rock face with exposure rated D (difficult) on the European via ferrata scale. Via ferrata is a style of equipped mountain climbing using fixed iron rungs and cables. Full day (6-8 hours). Proper via ferrata equipment required: harness, via ferrata set, and helmet. Approach from the Gosausee in Gosau. Open June to October when snow-free. Not suitable for inexperienced climbers. The route sits within the Hallstatt Dachstein-Salzkammergut UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
