The Domkirche St. Martin is Eisenstadt’s cathedral, originating from 1264 and elevated to cathedral status when the Diocese of Eisenstadt was created in 1960. It stands a few minutes’ walk from the Esterházy Palace, where Joseph Haydn served as Kapellmeister for nearly 30 years; Haydn worshipped here. Free entry; open most days. Combine with the Esterházy Palace, the Haydn Museum, and the Bergkirche (where Haydn’s heart is buried) for a full Eisenstadt day. Eisenstadt is about 50 km south of Vienna; direct bus from Meidling takes under an hour.
