The Dom zu Wiener Neustadt is a late Romanesque and early Gothic cathedral where Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III is buried, in a city he chose as his imperial residence in the 15th century. The exterior “Wappenwand” (heraldic wall) displays 107 coats of arms representing Friedrich’s genealogical claims, alongside his mysterious “AEIOU” motto. Wiener Neustadt is 40 minutes from Vienna Hauptbahnhof by Südbahn train and receives few visitors. Free entry; generally open daily. The city was founded in 1194 with ransom money paid for Richard I of England, captured in Austria during his return from the Crusades.
