The Dom zu St. Jakob (Cathedral of St. James) at Domplatz 6 in Innsbruck holds two things worth knowing before entering. First, the Baroque interior (white stucco, gold accents, ceiling frescoes by Cosmas Damian Asam) built between 1717 and 1724 is one of the finest examples of the style in Tyrol. Second, the high altar holds a Maria Hilf painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder from around 1530, one of the most venerated Marian images in the German-speaking world, donated by Archduke Ferdinand Charles in 1650. Daily carillon at the north tower around 12:10 PM is the largest in Austria with 48 bells. Free entry; 3 minutes’ walk from the Goldenes Dachl in Innsbruck’s pedestrian old town.
