The Dom zu Maria Saal stands on a hill north of Klagenfurt on the site where the missionary Modestus founded Carinthia’s first Christian church around 750 AD. The current Gothic structure has Roman carved stone reliefs embedded throughout its exterior walls, salvaged from the ruins of Virunum, the Roman capital of the province of Noricum, which lay on the Zollfeld plain below. The reliefs include a Roman post wagon scene that is one of the finest surviving examples of Roman wheel transportation imagery in the Alps. Free entry; about 10 km from Klagenfurt by car or Bus 601.
