Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg

The Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden was the second seat of Nazi power after Berlin. Hitler acquired a house here in 1928; by the mid-1930s the entire mountainside had been seized, farmed-out residences demolished, and rebuilt as a complex of government buildings, SS barracks, and underground bunkers.

The Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg at Salzbergstrasse 41 in Berchtesgaden presents the history of the Obersalzberg as the Nazi leadership’s mountain retreat and second seat of government after Berlin. The “Idyll and Crime” permanent exhibition covers 350 objects and includes access to the original bunker network beneath the site. Completely rebuilt and reopened in 2023. Admission around EUR 10; open Tuesday to Sunday 9 AM to 5 PM. RVO bus 840/849 from Berchtesgaden station (15 minutes), or by car. The bus to the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) also departs from the same parking area. Visit the documentation center before the Eagle’s Nest to understand what you are looking at on the mountain above.
