The Dobratsch (2,166 meters) above Villach is Carinthia’s landmark mountain, reached by the 16.5-km Villacher Alpenstrasse toll road that climbs to 1,732 meters, from which the summit is accessible on foot. The views on a clear day cover Austria, Italy, and Slovenia simultaneously. At the upper road terminus, the Deutsche Kirche and Windische Kirche (German and Slovenian churches) stand side by side, marking the cultural border that divided Carinthia’s German and Slovenian communities for centuries. Toll road open May to November, fee around EUR 10 per car. No public transport to the mountain; drive from Villach city (5 km to the entrance). Half-day trip.
