Devin Castle

Devin Castle sits where the Morava River meets the Danube, at the point where Slovakia touches Austria, and Napoleon's army blew up most of what was not already ruins in 1809. The site has been fortified since Celtic times, with Roman, Great Moravian, Hungarian, and Habsburg layers underneath what survives.

Devin Castle ruins sit on a cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, 10 km west of Bratislava at the Slovak-Austrian border. The site was fortified from Celtic and Roman times through the Great Moravian period; Napoleon’s army blew up most of the medieval structure in 1809. During the Communist era, the clifftop was part of the Iron Curtain border zone; a memorial now marks where people died trying to cross. Entry around EUR 5-7; open Tuesday-Sunday April-October. Bus 29 from Bratislava’s Most SNP stop. Allow 1.5-2 hours.
